How to Set Agency Commission Rules

Agency Commission Rules in Momentum AMS
Agency Commission Rules in Momentum AMS define how the system calculates your agency’s commission when transactions are generated.

Accurate setup ensures receivables, payables, and commission reports are correct — which is critical for billing, accounting, and reconciliation.

Best Practice: Always check for accuracy before your first transaction run. Commission errors can lead to time-consuming manual corrections.

Important:Commission rules are not required if:
  • The carrier downloads commission statements into Momentum AMS.
  • You upload commissions via a CSV file.
  • The carrier pays a flat 10% commission (this is the system default).

1️⃣ Access the Agency Commission Rules Tab

  1. Hover over your name in the upper-right corner of Momentum AMS.

  2. Click Agency Profile (Admin access required).

  3. In the top navigation bar of the Agency Profile screen, click Commission Rules.

  4. Select Agency Commission Rules from the available options.

2️⃣ Add a New Commission Rule

  1. Click Add New

  2. Fill in the available configuration fields:

    • Carriers – Select carriers

    • MGAs – Select if the commission applies to a specific MGA.

    • Referral Sources – Optional; tie the commission rule to a referral source.

    • Date From / Date To – Effective date range for the rule.

    • LOB Class – Choose from your agency’s configured LOB classes.

    • Line of Business – Choose a specific LOB or leave as “Any” to apply across all lines.

    • Location – Select the applicable agency location (if multi-location setup).

    • Ignore during Carrier Downloads processing – Check this if the rule should not override downloaded commission data.

    • Use only for Processor Agency Commissions – Check if this rule should only apply when processing agency commissions.

    • New Business % – Commission percentage for new business.

    • Renewal % – Commission percentage for renewal business.

    • Corporate Commission Info – Appears to the right of the New Business and Renewal fields. Use this if your agency’s commissions are split with an aggregator or cluster (e.g., SIAA, SmartChoice). This field lets you record or calculate the corporate/parent organization’s share separately from your agency’s retained commission. This allows you to build in the split you have with that aggregator and calculate your actual commission.

3️⃣ Save and Prioritize Your Rules

  • Click Save to activate the rule.

  • If multiple rules could apply, Momentum AMS will use the most specific match:

    • Carrier + LOB rule overrides a general carrier rule.

4️⃣ Edit or Archive Commission Rules

  • Edit – Click the rule, adjust details, and save.

  • – Use this if the rule is no longer in effect but you want to keep a historical record.

Note: Changes only affect future transactions — past transactions will not update automatically.

5️⃣ How Rules Are Applied in Transactions

When you Generate Transaction from a policy’s Billing tab:

  • The system checks for a matching Agency Commission Rule.

  • The New Business % or Renewal % is applied based on the policy’s business type.

  • Commission is calculated automatically in the receivable/payable split.

6️⃣ Best Practices

  • Set up rules for every active carrier/MGA you work with (unless commissions are always downloaded or CSV-uploaded).

  • Review quarterly to confirm they match current contracts.

  • Use effective dates for changes instead of overwriting old rules.

  • Test by generating a sample transaction to confirm correct calculations.

  • Document any special commission arrangements in the policy notes.
